The Reminder
Mission Statement for First United Methodist Church of Yankton:
"To grow disciples of Jesus Christ and equip them for ministry"
Pastor’s Word By Rev Dean
This past Friday and Saturday my family and I were in Lincoln, NE. Our daughter, Kimberly, had her Junior Vocal Recital on Friday evening at Nebraska Wesleyan University (I know I’m her dad and a bit partial, but she did an awesome job!). Whenever we go to Lincoln, I always have to force the rest of my family to do something I want to do – go shopping! Oh, wait a minute. I guess they have to force me to do what they want to do!
Anyway, as we were driving back to the University from a few hours (seemed like an eternity) of shopping, the streets were a bit slushy, the traffic was quite heavy, and there were pot holes all over the place. So I was not driving the speed limit. I think I was driving 30 instead of 35. At one point we heard a horn honking, but couldn’t figure out where it came from. However, when we pulled up to the next intersection, we found out. A woman in a pickup came by on the right hand side of us – honking and giving us (me) one of the meanest looks I’ve seen in a while. She sped around me, turned and (flew) down the street. She was obviously upset that I was not driving the speed limit.
None of us could believe how rude that woman was. And Kimberly said something like, “She could tell we were from out of state. That’s no way to treat someone who is a guest in your city.”
As I have thought about that incident, I wondered how welcome persons feel when they come to worship with us. I really doubt that anyone in the church would be as rude as that person who was following us in Lincoln. But do we talk to people who appear to be visiting the church or do we just look at them – or look away from them? Do we offer to show them where the sanctuary is located, or invite them into Wesley Hall for coffee? If they have little children, will you show them where the nursery is located?
I doubt anyone would be rude to a visitor to First UMC. But do we make them feel welcome? I hope we are glad to have guests in our midst. So what do you do to make them feel welcome?

The Worship Committee has decided to use a video series for our time together on Wednesday evenings during the season of Lent (6 sessions, February 24, March 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31). We are going to use a series entitled, “The Easter Experience.” This series brings the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus to life through dramatic storytelling and challenging teaching and explores a universal theme relevant to our lives all year. There is no preparation or previous knowledge required to take part in this inspiring and educational series!
Session themes are:
My Life Has a Purpose - Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Focusing on the Last Supper, this episode reveals that our life purpose is found in serving others, following Christ’s example. (February 24)
My Life Can Change - We’ve all made bad choices, but we don’t have to be held prisoner by them. Through the betrayals of Peter and Judas, we discover our responses in similar situations can lead to repentance and life, or despair and death. (March 3)
My Pain Is Understood - The journey to the cross was marked by betrayal, abuse, humiliation, loneliness and agonizing pain. “Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 2:18, NIV) (March 10)
My Life Has a Plan - This episode imagines the thoughts and emotions of Mother Mary as she witnessed Jesus’ journey on the road to Golgotha. (March 17)
I Have the Promise of Eternal Life - The heart of the gospel message is powerfully presented as we experience the Crucifixion and death of Christ. (March 24)
I Have a Hope That Never Dies - Mary Magdalene’s miraculous experience at the tomb is filled with a new message of hope and the promise of eternal life. (March 31)
After watching the DVD, we’ll break into smaller groups for a time of discussion. Those who want to discuss can discuss and those who want to listen can just listen. I hope you will make plans to be a part of this study during the season of Lent.

I will be scheduling a Membership Class on a Sunday afternoon in March (I haven’t decided which one yet!). The class will begin at 2:00 and conclude by 4:30. It will either be held in the Conference Room or in the Adult Sunday School Room, depending on the size of the class (there will be a sign when you come in the main door).
The Membership Class is for those who are transferring their membership from another UMC or from another denomination as well as those who have no membership in any church at the present time. Youth who have completed their Confirmation Studies are also invited to attend.
Persons interested in attending this class should register by contacting the church office (665-2991 or firstumc@iw.net) or me (665-2991 or revdean@iw.net) immediately so that I can make the necessary arrangements. Even if you have talked to me previously about attending the next class, let me know again. If you have questions, feel free to contact me.

Camp Sunday is scheduled for March 21. This is a time for us to promote summer camping at our 3 UM Camps in the Dakotas Conference. I want to encourage everyone to come dressed as if they are at church camp (jeans, shorts, t-shirts).
Following the 10:30 worship service, a camp meal will be served by our Confirmation Class. A free-will offering will be received for the meal. The Confirmation Class will use the money they earn to purchase a gift for the church.
Following the meal, an informational meeting will be held to help youth and parents begin to plan which camps they will attend. At this meeting, you can begin to talk about sharing rides to camp, etc. If you attended a camp last year, you have already received the new brochure in the mail. Bring it with you that day to help with the discussion.

We are looking for someone who might be interested in being a part of the PowerPoint Presentation Ministry here at First UMC. Specifically, we are looking for someone (or it could be a team) who would be interested in putting the presentation together for the Sunday morning worship service. Alyssa Trapp has been doing this for several years. She will be graduating from High School and going off to college this fall, so we want to begin to train someone else to do this. If this is something you might be interested in, please be in touch with me (revdean@iw.net).

Everybody talks about going green. Well, we have been sending the REMINDER out to several members of the church by email instead of printing it off and mailing it. There are at least three advantages to that. One, you can help save the environment by not having us use the paper. Two, you save the church money by not having to send it through the mail. And three, you get it earlier. The REMINDER is taken to the Post Office on Wednesday and probably not delivered to you until Thursday or Friday (or later, depending on where you live). It is also emailed on Wednesday and you receive it in a matter of minutes.
If you’d like to receive your copy of the REMINDER by email rather than through the mail, please contact Lisa in the office (firstumc@iw.net).
UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) is reaching out to and through United Methodist connections in Haiti to help in response to the devastating earthquake that hit there nearly two weeks ago. Our financial help is desperately needed. Make checks payable to First UMC with “Haiti earthquake” in the memo. If you are giving cash, you may use an envelope from the pew. Again, write “Haiti earthquake” on the envelope and if you would like credit (for IRS purposes) put your name on the envelope. Health kits are also needed for Haiti. Stop by the church office for instructions on making a kit.

The Turkey Supper is just a few days away. We are still in need of items to be donated or monetary donations to keep our cost down. If you would like to donate food items call Carol Becker (665-4694) and she can tell you what is still needed as she is in charge of the cooking (so we know the meal will be delicious). Cash donations can be dropped off at the church office clearly marked Turkey Supper. If you are able to help work, please call Diane Kisch (660-1242).
Tickets can be purchased in the church office or at the door. Cost is $7.50 for adults (13 & older) and $4.00 for children (12 & under). Proceeds from the turkey supper this year will be used for the kitchen remodel.
If you have any questions please call me.

Thank you to all that participated in our Super Bowl Chili Competition and Silent Auction fundraiser. It was a great success because of your contributions! The Chili Competition raised $645.75 with the 6 pack of Peppers team raising the most funds. These proceeds are helping take 16 youth to Church Rally at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell and possibly over 27 youth on a Tubing trip in Sioux Falls. Thank you for your support of these exciting activities! Also raised at this fundraiser was $955.52 at the silent auction – the youth are also extremely excited about this total as it goes towards a big screen TV and some other fun stuff for the youth group room. Thank you again for all of your support of the Kids For Christ Youth Group – it is greatly appreciated and blesses many!

Things to come: It’s a busy time but there is still so much more to be done in youth group! We are awaiting a new Christian movie that came out – hope to get to go as a group. There is a destination unknown to be found. And planning has begun for the Spring lock-in. The Spring lock-in is traditionally done on the Friday before our 8th graders get confirmed. So April 16th will be the lock-in. We look forward to celebrating the confirmands.

What an amazing ministry our church is taking out into the community! We are touching lives in a way that many didn’t think possible. We are bringing the love of Jesus Christ to those that are in such a pivotal time in their lives; we are bringing that love to the children! AND we are doing it in the public school system!! Through the grace of God, we have done what many said isn’t possible! We have always known that the Lord is in our schools, but now we are there as a testament to Him! You should hold your heads up high as members and supporters of First UM Church here in Yankton. I just want to shout from the rooftops! I hope you will shout with me! Shout to the Lord!
Talking to one of the mentors this week showed me just how much the kids are soaking up all that we can give them! This particular little guy told his mentor that heshould stay for TWO hours. Or come every day…or even better yet, come one day a week and spend the WHOLE DAY! How great is that? To which our mentor replied, “If you can clear it with your teacher, I will be here!” I have a hard time determining who is more excited, the little guy…or our mentor! It’s a God Thing!

Thank you to everyone that donated to Human Relations Day and our Bucket Sunday for UMCOR for Haiti in January.
Our Bucket Sunday raised $273.81 for the less fortunate in Haiti.
Even with the bad weather on Valentine’s Day, our Bake Sale and Angels for Haiti was a great success raising $316.50 for Helping Hands for Haiti.
A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who purchased those delicious goodies and Angels and we hope you have enjoyed them. The Valentine goodies were donated by Carol Becker, Mary Alice Halverson, and Karen Miller. Hats Off to you ladies and we Thank You for all your help.
(Editors note: Linda Nelson is the person who donated all of the Angels. Since she wrote this article, she wouldn’t say that, but I can! Thanks, Linda, for your donation, too!)
The Mission Focus for March will be “One Great Hour of Sharing.” Remember, all the money raised during this time helps with administrative costs for UMCOR so they can be first to any disaster that strikes. UMCOR was first on the ground in Haiti because of this Special Sunday Mission. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. –Micah 6:8

Confirmation Rummage Sale
Denise Willman
8th Grade Confirmation Teacher
Just letting you know that it is that time of year again when spring cleaning comes to mind. If you have stuff you no longer need or just want to get rid of, please keep our Confirmation Class in mind. They are having a rummage sale May 1st and can use all the junk we can get. Once again we are raising money to buy a gift that would benefit our church. This year it will be The Lord’s Supper picture and part of the series of the 12 Apostles that will be displayed in our dining room. If you have junk we'll turn it into someone else’s treasure. You may drop the items off in our classroom on the lower level, southeast side. We will need volunteers to unpack and set up the rummage on Friday, April 30th. It’s a big under taking and we appreciate all the help we can get. If you needhelp to haul or pick up stuff, please call Denise Willman 665-2869 or Julie Moderegger at 665-1091.
We have several items in our lost & found in the church office. There are several pairs of reading glasses, a planner, cell phone case, baseball cap, keys, scarf and gloves. We have an older bible that was presented to Kate Luckinbill by Hershel Culp. If you think any of these items belong to you, stop by the church office. There are also some jackets hanging in the coat closet that have been there for some time.
Pallets of baked items are delivered every Tuesday morning to the Assembly of God Church, 801 West 25th Street. The bakery items are available at 8:30 a.m. and are available to the public free of charge. Please share this information with others.

How wonderful it is this time of year that we have a Lenten period... a time to reflect about what life is all about, and time to grow spiritually, and to seek repentance. Taking some time to intentionally ponder on what mission God has for each one of us. It also stirs questions of the origin and customs of Lent.
Do you know...
1- Why Ash Wednesday occurs 46 days before Easter Sunday?
2- Why Easter Sunday may be as early as Feb. 4 or as late as March 10?
3- How the name "Ash Wednesday" came about?
4- Why during Ash Wednesday service, often, the Minister marks a cross on the forehead using ashes from burning the previous year's palm branches?
5- When Easter was first observed and celebrated as a religious holiday?
Answers:
1- Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days (40 days not counting Sundays) before Easter. Catholic tradition is to fast on Ash Wed. and during Lent; however no fasting on the Sabbath Day.
2- Easter is observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal Equinox, as calculated according to the tables used in western Churches on the Gregorian calendar. This is why the date of Easter Sunday varies. The Equinox is the time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator, making night and day of equal length all over the earth.
3/4-”Ash Wednesday" is so named because ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible to express penitence. Ashes are used to mark the forehead of participants to signify repentance during the Ash Wednesday service.
5- According to Encyclopedia Britannica 11th Ed., Easter slowly came to replace the Passover by A.D. 325.
The 10:30 Adult Sunday School Class has started a new video series. Dave Cornemann & Vivian Van Essen will be leading the class on Sunday on MODERN PARABLES. This new bible study uses modern stories that recreate in the viewer the same responses that the original audiences of Jesus' parables might have experienced.

Hy-Vee Cash Cards
Have you purchased a Hy-Vee Cash Card recently? First UMC has raised $973 since January 1, 2010 from the Cash Card sales. The Church Council has designated the profits from the card sales in 2009 to be used for the Church Kitchen remodeling/updating project! Help us improve our kitchen by purchasing Hy-Vee Cash Cards!
This project costs you nothing! You purchase a card for $50 or $100 and you go and purchase $50 or $100 worth of groceries, prescriptions, gas or anything Hy-Vee sells. The church receives 5% of the price of your purchase. If you spend $100, the church receives $5.00. Cards may be purchased on Sundays from 8:45-9:00 & 10:00-10:30. They are also available during the week in the church office. What a great way to make some money for the kitchen update/remodel project!
By Jeremy Koerselman
Missions Committee member
The Missions Committee is providing an ongoing opportunity to the congregation of 1st UMC to follow the church’s mission statement by providing financial assistance for those who have an idea of an act of mission they wish to do. This financial assistance is provided in the hope to facilitate more frequent and individually inspired mission projects throughout our congregation in order to extend the reach of 1st UMC’s mission efforts into the community.
The Mission Assistance Program would like to fund missional ideas that are small and large; new ideas or tried and true acts of mission work for individuals or groups in the community.
The Mission Assistance Program is not an avenue to make fundraising requests for church sponsored trips or projects of the Missions Committee but rather an avenue to enable other projects.*
*Individual requests for trips and projects are still welcomed by contacting a Missions Commit tee member, as funds are available for these as well.
Applications are available in the church office. For further information you may contact Jeremy Koerselman at 661-8317 or another Missions Committee member.
